Jack

So if you know me – you probably know that I have a serious Jack White problem.  Anything he does is perfection to me.  When I heard the news that The White Stripes had broken up I nearly died because I knew I would not have the chance to see them live.  When I read THIS news – that he would be releasing a solo album in April titled Blunderbuss – I nearly died again.  I will be seeing him live for this.  Oh yes.

The Crying Game.

Its been awhile since we’ve done The Crying Game.  Initially I said I was going to keep up with everything that makes me cry and then share all of the ridiculousness at the end of each month.  But it was just too much.  So I think I’ll just pop in every once in a while and say.

This one gets me every single time.

The parade scene in Ferris Buellers Day Off.  Most specifically the part when Ferris “performs” Twist and Shout by The Beatles

It even just made me cry when I watched it on youtube to find it for this blog post….

I don’t know what it is about it.  I guess its probably a bunch of little things.

Seeing a Beatles song being “performed” in front of an audience?

Knowing that a lot of the footage was just of real Chicago citizens who showed up for the real parade that went through the streets just before this movie one came trailing behind it and really reacted in such a raucous way – singing and dancing along?  (why yes I am a commentary – making of biography-special features watching nerd)

Seeing so many different ages and cultures singing and dancing along to the same rock n roll song?  (I guess it also helps that it is The Beatles)

Christmas Time Is Here….

Well….not really.  But I have started my christmas shopping! Is it too early to be talking about christmas you guys? Halloween hasn’t even passed us by yet.

Halloween has always been my favorite holiday – but I think christmas may be beating it out this year. Maybe me being stuck in North Alabama with no friends that are interested in Halloween and a husband who could care less about it too has gotten me a little down over the past few years. When we were home in Mobile, our friends would dress up and go out with us, which made my husband a little more excited about it. But here – nah. We pretty much dress up and sit around the house watching horror movies-and I have to make him do that much. Can anyone say downer?

I have however been pretty excited about christmas. I’m trying to hold off on pulling out the tunes and movies until after Thanksgiving though. We are going to the hometown this year and I can’t wait to see everyone. I have been really missing my friends over this past year. We are going to get our butts to Bellingrath Gardens while we are there too! If you don’t know about Bellingrath – they are beautiful gardens in Mobile, Alabama – at christmas they put up these spectacular light shows that you can walk through and explore and I haven’t been in five years. Here are a few crappy images taken with a point and shoot from that trip five years ago – just to give you an idea. I will bring my camera this year and take some good images to share with you guys.

and one from the web.

I hope it isn’t hot this year though.  There are pictures of me from the last Mobile christmas wearing my pea coat so that seems promising.

(me with my Granny, mom, and stepdad – Mobile Christmas 2009)

Anyway – I have been waiting for A Very She and Him Christmas to come out and its here!  I had to at LEAST give it a listen before black Friday!  You guys take a listen too.  Zooeys voice is just delightful.

If you guys would like more christmas music suggestions I have another for you – One of my favorite albums is Ella Fitzgerald Wishes You A Merry Christmas and my favorite christmas song ever is Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas performed by Judy Garland.

(subliminal message for Marsha if she is reading this….I sure do hope there are some buckeyes this christmas – wink wink!)

Jam Of The Day!

Or maybe I should say Jam Of The Night since it is past my bedtime already.  I just got done watching one of my favorite movies – The Virgin Suicides.  The music by Air is so dreamy and a perfect fit.  Give Playground Love a listen.

I love how the song comes from pieces of Luxs gum.

Kodachrome.

Last week I was about to pop in my ear buds and listen to some tunes on my iPod – when I realized it had reset itself.   At first I was angry.  I mean, come on, there was so much music on that thing it was going to take me FOR EV ER to fill it up again.  But then I thought to myself, whatevs I needed to clean it out anyway.  As I was scrolling through our music library, I was looking in the Paul Simon section and my eyes stopped on ‘Kodachrome’.  As a photographer, this title stopped me.  What is this song about awesome vintage film?  The film that my favorite vintage images were taken on?  I pushed play and listened up.  I KNOW that song.  When the upbeat tune started I immediately knew what it was and it took me back.  I can actually be very specific about what it took me back to.  It took me back to when I was eight years and watching the movie ‘Coneheads’ OVER AND OVER AGAIN.  This song was in the movie.  But, when I was eight years old I had no idea what kodachrome was, so the lyrics never registered with me.  I have been listening to it non stop ever since then.  The lyrics just make me smile.  So here, listen to Kodachrome.  While you’re at it, look at these pictures I took of my baby boy last week.  I processed them to mimic Kodachrome film and I think I’ll do this much more often.  I hope the song puts a smile on your face as it does mine.

“Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors
You give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah! ”

The End Of An Era.

So kids, last week I had a bit of sadness enter my life.  One of my most favoritest bands, The White Stripes, are no more.

If you haven’t given them a listen, you have been deprived.  We were planning on seeing them live the next time they tour.  Now we won’t be able to and this is a lesson in ‘sometimes there may not be a next time.’

They went on a tour across Canada in 2007 and released their only live album, a dvd documentary, and a book of photographs taken documenting the tour.  You can get the whole box set for about $260 – or buy it piece by piece like me.  I just received the book in the mail.  It is normally $45 but right now on Amazon its $9.  My friend Jimmy tweeted that deal to me and I immediately snagged it!

I didn’t want to take too many pictures of someone elses photography – so here is the cover and my favorite shots – Meg and Jack sleeping on a plane.

New Orleans.

Today I was straightening the kitchen some and decided to take my Cafe Du Monde coffee can out for a little photo shoot.  We bought this on our honeymoon trip to New Orleans!  I have been wanting to go back ever since – maybe next summer….  This summer we are planning on going to visit my mom at the beach and to Atlanta.

While I was daydreaming about New Orleans I dug up some new orleans and saints centric stuff from the files.

Christmas Music.

I love Christmas music!  I know, I know, some of you grinches out there will remind me that its just the same five songs over and over sung by different artists. To that i say….WHATEVS!  I like to listen to it first thing in the morning and it sets me in a good mood for the rest of the day.  I set my Xmas ringtone this morning.  I chose my favorite christmas song.  Can you guess what it is?  I bet you cant.  Or maybe you can I probably posted it last year.

Judy Garland sings it like no other.

I also love listening to the album Ella Wishes You A Merry Christmas.  It would be my Christmas party soundtrack.  Go give it a listen and see for your self.  I love her version of Sleigh Ride the best.

I probably posted these exact two songs last year.  Hey – maybe I have some new readers!

Comfort Music.

Everyone has it.  Comfort music.  Songs you can listen to and they just automatically put you at ease, make you feel lighter, as if any stress laying on your chest has just been lifted.  This song is comfort music to me.

Growing up, Red Hot Chili Peppers was my favorite band.  I was eight years old when this song came out.  They recorded it when they recorded Blood Sugar Sex Magik in ’91 but didn’t release it on the album.  They put it on the Coneheads soundtrack in ’93 (hence the conehead in the video and the Chris Farley cameo).

Cold Mountain.

I’m spending the day on the computer – in blogland, editing from my last JJP wedding, ordering product.  Over on ye olde tv Cold Mountain is on.  If you haven’t seen this movie – go watch it.  But even more importantly.  Go listen to the soundtrack.  The movie is moving in and of itself, but paired with the music….the music kind of makes it for me.  The music is “The Crying Game” worthy I can tell you that.  Some songs on the soundtrack are religious – which I am not – but I still frequently listen to them.  The music is raw and full of emotion.  Please, go listen.

Here is Jack White performing “Wayfaring Stranger” live.
