The 20 Something Society

We're going to make it after all.

As I work today, I am listening to some of my Spotify playlists.  While singing along to ‘Sister Suffragette’ from Mary Poppins, I thought to myself ‘Maybe this is where my interest in womens rights was started.’  I firmly believe that the base of who we are is set from a very young age.  This belief was only further solidified for me after watching the documentary Up series which is absolutely amazing.  Each segment begins with the director quoting “Give me a child until he is seven, and I will give you the man.”

But, this thought led to another realization.  As most of you know we are planning a trip to London.  I get asked ‘Why London?’  My only answer is ‘I don’t know, I’ve just always wanted to go!’.  When Disneys Peter Pan (my favorite Disney movie) was released a couple of months ago I pre ordered it, and Todd and I were watching it together when I jokingly said ‘Maybe this is why I always wanted to go to London’.  The Darlings are British and fly through London and past Big Ben.  Today I realized that probably my most watched childrens movies growing up were Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Mary Poppins, and Peter Pan….Maybe that IS the reason I have always been fascinated with England!

Be thoughtful about what you expose your children to while they are young.  It does no good to shelter them and open them up to very little.  Kids are like little sponges and their inner voice and deepest interests (in other words who they ARE as people) are being decided in their very early years.  How they are treated/ spoken to and what they are exposed to will make the biggest impact during that time!

My sister-in-law is staying at our place this weekend, so tonight we decided to light up the fire pit and roast some hot dogs and then smores for dessert.  This is one of my absolute favorite things to do, Todd got me the fire pit for my birthday last year.  I don’t care what hot dogs are made out of, they are one of my personal comfort junk foods.  Growing up one of my uncles called me ‘Hot Dog’ as a nickname because that is all I ever wanted to eat.  We had fun, sister-in-law had NEVER ROASTED A HOT DOG over an open flame before.  I was like…what?  She can say that no longer.

And here I am with the goofiest hobo hair ever.  I’ll blame it on the wind blowing.

Klaus chilling at his Aunties feet, and then saying “UGH” because the smoke monster was coming for him.

It doesn’t take much to excite me.  I feel like I am about to jump out of my skin because of a few seemingly minor upcoming tid bits.

1.  I get to measure in tomorrow!!!

2. Todd and I are going to do trivia tomorrow night.  I’ve never done it before and I know that is a shock to anyone who knows me.

3. THE EVIL DEAD REMAKE COMES OUT NEXT WEEK! ERMEHGERD!  Major date night in The Murphy household (considering we officially met each other at a showing of The Evil Dead at Megs house).

I think its a good thing when these simple items can get me so pumped.  Enjoy the little things.

Two of my favorites came up from the hometown to keep me company this weekend – Jenny and Maria!  Well, really mostly Saturday!  They arrived late Friday and left Sunday.  So we jam packed our Saturday.

Went shopping and heard from Maria that we “weren’t making her very happy right now..”

We ate some yummy food including Marias first calamari!

Got in plenty of cuddle time with Klaus.

I took some mother/daughter portraits.  We were supposed to do some during Christmas when we down but the weather was icky.  So when we figured out they were coming up for a visit we wanted to take them then, and sure enough the weather was icky again!  I wasnt goign to let that hold us back again – I picked a location that would work with rain and we went out and had some fun.  I can’t wait to really dig into their images.

Watched scary movies and ate popcorn with chocolate for dinner.

No, Maria would not care for Fargo.  It is out because I was watching it before they arrived Friday night!

After watching the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake I think Maria was little scared because she asked to watch a funny  movie.  After doing some Amazon Prime browsing we settled on dancing around to the Footloose remake.

Pup Pups.

Pup Pups, on my cell phone, make me happy.

Yesterday my friend Chris tweeted out a picture of the hunting dogs he had spent the day with while hunting quail.  I immediately saved it and set it as my lock screen and background on my phone.  Everytime I have to look at the thing (which is frequently) I get to be greeting by these super cute puppy dogs!!

I think I’m ready for the change in seasons now.

THIS IS A HOSTAGE SITUATION.

(this is what happens when you leave something at my house, foo dogs confiscate.)

Food, Life

Baking.

Today we did some baking.

My duties were limited to cleaning that mixer thing with my mouth, and stacking cooled cookies in a pretty stack on a cake plate.  These cookies are both of our favorites I do believe, they involve toasted pecans, toffee bits, and choco chunks.

When we were married our families got together and we were gifted with a custom cook book with family photographs and recipes submitted by different family members, and the recipe for our favorite cookies is in that book- from Todds cousins Michelle and Sarah.  We are pretty dang happy that they included that recipe!

Life

Ghost Stories.

I have been fascinated with all things paranormal, macabre, supernatural, and occult for a long time now.  I don’t know why, just call me twisted.  By fascinated I mean, watching movies, documentaries, and reading about.  I can’t really tell you what I believe is out there, because I know that no one knows what is out there.  But I can tell you that I believe enough in the paranormal/ occult activities enough that I’m not willing to mess with it!  I am NOT going to play with a ouija board, I am NOT going to go reading any sort of incantation, and if something freaky is going on, I’m getting the heck out of dodge!

That being said, as I work today, I am watching episodes of Celebrity Ghost Stories On Demand.  Do I believe every one of these stories?  No.  Some of them I think ‘Whew, thats a trip.’ Some of them I think ‘Honey, that was a dream you had when you were 8 and thought it was real.’  But I got to thinking, there sure are a lot of celebrities willing to talk about their paranormal experience, and if there are that many willing to talk about it, you better believe there are at least double that who believes they have been through similar experiences, but are not willing to talk about it.

This got me to thinking – how many of YOU have your own ghost story to tell?  I would love to hear of any experiences you have had!  Please share in the comments!

People always say, that people who are open minded and believe that these types of things can happen are more likely to have an experience.  Seeing as I fall into that category, I have been terrified that I will eventually see something that I do not want to see.

I do have my own story to share, and I am going to do that since I am asking you guys to share yours.

When I was in the 8,9, 10 age range we lived in a house in Tillmans Corner. At that time, my step siblings lived with their mother, my mom would sleep in the day and waitress at night, and my step dad would work in the day, and often go work on some side jobs at night.  So I was by myself.  One night, my mom was at work, and my stepdad was at our next door neighbors house, working on their car.  The way our living room was set up, if you laid on the couch you could see a straight shot down the hallway.  I was laying on the couch, in the house alone, watching Seinfeld.  All of a sudden a closed door in the hallway opened.  Not just a little bit.  It opened all the way, wide open.  It stood for a moment.  And then it slammed closed.  I immediately hid under my blanket, scared to death.  I was too scared to move, too scared to make a sound.  I eventually fell asleep that way.  When my stepdad came home he woke me up and I jumped, not knowing it was him.  I don’t remember after that, if I told him what I saw and he shrugged it off, if I later told my mom, I just don’t remember.

Life

Fortune.

Todd drug me out for chinese today.  He really likes good old American chinese buffet food, whereas me…not so much.  I used to love it when I was younger, and I love asian flavors, but I do not really like that kind of ‘chinese’ food anymore.  It is such crap that it always makes my stomach hurt because it isn’t used to grease and whatnot.  But, I feel bad always saying no since he likes it so much, so every once and again we go.

I’ve noticed that the fortunes in fortune cookies aren’t really ‘fortunes’ anymore, but just statements and proverbs.  Here were ours from today:

Fortune cookie manufacturers.  You’re doing it wrong.
