My sister-in-law is staying at our place this weekend, so tonight we decided to light up the fire pit and roast some hot dogs and then smores for dessert. This is one of my absolute favorite things to do, Todd got me the fire pit for my birthday last year. I don’t care what hot dogs are made out of, they are one of my personal comfort junk foods. Growing up one of my uncles called me ‘Hot Dog’ as a nickname because that is all I ever wanted to eat. We had fun, sister-in-law had NEVER ROASTED A HOT DOG over an open flame before. I was like…what? She can say that no longer.
And here I am with the goofiest hobo hair ever. I’ll blame it on the wind blowing.
Klaus chilling at his Aunties feet, and then saying “UGH” because the smoke monster was coming for him.
Today we did some baking.
My duties were limited to cleaning that mixer thing with my mouth, and stacking cooled cookies in a pretty stack on a cake plate. These cookies are both of our favorites I do believe, they involve toasted pecans, toffee bits, and choco chunks.
When we were married our families got together and we were gifted with a custom cook book with family photographs and recipes submitted by different family members, and the recipe for our favorite cookies is in that book- from Todds cousins Michelle and Sarah. We are pretty dang happy that they included that recipe!
We shot our first wedding of 2013 today. What that means is….we barely ate all day and when we were done we were STARVING. We stopped off at Bib Bob Gibsons in Decatur for some BBQ. I had the biggest pork stuffed potato I have ever seen and it was delicious.
I will say something about BBQ joints up north. (Yes, I know we’re just in North Alabama compared to South Alabama, but its surprising how different it is up here.) They like WHITE barbecue sauce up here (opposed to the red we like in the south). It is so weird. They also don’t tend to serve fries with their barbecue. They also have a VINEGAR based coleslaw (EWWW!!!! Wheres the mayo?!). We’ve grown used to these regional preferences and it no longer surprises us. BUT, tonight we ordered a slice of apple pie to share in this cold weather. The thought of a slice of warm apple pie seemed so nice. Todd took the first bite and said “You aren’t going to be happy.” And I knew it right away – THIS PIE IS COLD?! Who eats cold apple pie!? Is this another one of these North Alabama things? Do they prefer cold apple pie? Well thats just crazy talk.
Todd had a big conference to go to in New Orleans this past January, and although I have never went with him to any of his conferences before, I HAD to go to this one! I LOVE New Orleans – and it is where we honeymooned. Todd and I love to eat, and when going somewhere like New Orleans we were quite excited about deciding where we were going to go. We knew from the start of the trip that we HAD to go to Sucre. They are known for their delicious macaroons – and they have some spectacular gelato sundaes as well. We knew we wanted to pig out at Sucre – so we skipped dinner that night and went right to dessert! We each ordered a sundae – Todd had the Sucre Sundae: chocolate and caramel sauce, dark chocolate gelato, chocolate croutons, whipped cream, cocoa nibs, and a chocolate macaroon on top. I had the All Things Nola Sundae: bananas foster sauce, brown butter pecan gelato, bread pudding pieces, whipped cream, candied roasted pecans. They were both delish but we BOTH suggest you get the All Things Nola Sundae ( I know I will get one everytime I go from now on.) if you stop by , and pick up a few macaroons for the road.
There are a million awesome things about this time of year and the holidays. The things that are on my mind are full of calories and totally scrumptious.
Thats right is is definitely time for Starbucks eggnog latte, gingerbread latte, and peppermint mochas!
And just what is the most perfect thing to go with any one of these? Peppermint bark! I LOOOVE peppermint bark. Ghiradelli is yummy and easily accessible, but if you have thirty bucks to drop on chocolate treats my favorite is from Williams-Sonoma.
(p.s. I was browsing the holiday coffee creamers at the grocery store yesterday and there is eggnog latte, maple brown sugar latte, peppermint mocha, white chocolate raspberry, and gingerbread latte!)
WHOA – I haven’t been here in a while. Sorry! Been supra busy. And then there was that week where there was no internet access anyway due to the fact that North Alabama was devastated by a series of tornados. Trying to get back to my normal bloggy scheduling. This not will not be regular bloggy scheduling though. I’ll get back to that hopefully tomorrow. For now i will leave you with this. I am craving pancakes.
