The 20 Something Society

We're going to make it after all.

Todd ordered the Rick Steves guide to London tonight.  I can’t wait for it to arrive so that I can read through every single page!  If you do actually want to ‘click to look inside!’ you’ll need to go on to Amazon (where I snagged this photo).

Rick Steves is a popular and well trusted travel guide whom advocates ‘independent traveling’ and visiting European cities more like a ‘temporary local’.  His guides are what we hear are THE guides so…thats why we ordered it!

‘Tis the season…to spend all of our money on buying presents for our loved ones!!  Amongst other things!  I for one, love buying gifts for people.  The hubs is all too happy to let me bother with all of it too.  I’ve been a busy girl lately.  When I start asking my family what they would like or Xmas, they in turn tend to ask me for a list, which I happily send!  This year I decided to look at my lists as inspiration and give any of you who may need some ideas for a 20-something lady in your life!

Try something gold and sparkly!  We are still young enough to pull it off, and nothing says festive to me like some gold sparkle!!

A 20-Something ALWAYS NEEDS something for the home that they are still putting together.

Treat them to some entertainment to feed their mind.  Movies, books, music, art, hobby related items, and TRIPS! (To Hogwarts?  Well, maybe to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter)

(Vulture Print,Camera Bag,Britten: The Young Persons Guide To The Orchestra,Peter Pan)

I hope this post have given some of you ideas for you loved ones!!

Scary Stories.

I have always loved to read.  I don’t give myself so much time for it now – but I used to FLY through books.  I was the kid who would sit in class with their school book open and propped up, with whatever ‘pleasure reading’ book I was reading at the time opened up inside.  NOW I try to give myself time to read a chapter a night and that doesn’t even always work out!  I definitely have my genre faves, and I have to say that the number one choice would probably be horror novels.  First it was Goosebumps and Tales From The Crypt comics, then I moved up to Fear Street, and then when the sixth grade came knocking, I started my Stephen King fixation.

But really , before Goosebumps, there was Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark.  Do you guys remember these books?

I don’t know what happened to my old copies, the ones I bought from the book fairs in elementary school – and I’m quite sad about it!!  I still remember the hauntingly brilliant illustrations by Stephen Gammell.  The illustrations were REALLY scary – just as scary as the stories!

Well I don’t know what happened..but it seems the publishers things kids these days are little pansies and can’t handle the Gammell!  This happened a bit ago, but I’m just getting around to blogging about it.  It really does make me sad that they took his illustrations out and put in some by Brett Helquist.  I mean, Helquist is a great illustrator, and has done a lot….but his illustrations are not right for this book, and really no one else’s would fit.  Gammell are perfection.  See for yourself!!!

I truly am saddened by it, and I guess I will have to try to find used copies for my kiddos if I ever have any.  I’ll leave you with this little ‘Scary Stories’ tidbit-

“Did you ever think as a hearse goes by that you  may be the next to die?  They wrap you up in a big white sheet from you head down to your feet.  And the worms crawl in and the worms crawl out, In your stomach and out your snout, And your eyes fall out and your teeth decay- And that is the end of a perfect day.”

Books

Year 5.

I’m pretty excited to be a fifth year now.  Starting Harry Potter and the Order of  the Phoenix!

I stumbled across this book called The Half.  It is a collection of photographs by one Simon Annand.  The Half is a collection of photographs of actors during the thirty minutes before hitting the stage – which actors call, you guessed it, The Half.  Here are some of Simons photographs.

Daniel Day Lewis

Daniel Radcliffe

David Tennant

Martin Sheen

Simon Beale

Tilda Swinton

I hope you enjoyed viewing these photographs of actors in what is known to them as an intimate moment as much as I do.

Just wanted to tell you guys how yummy this Baileys Creme Brulee coffee creamer is!  You should try it.  Doesn’t this look like a lovely morning, a nice big mug of yummy creme brulee coffee, a book, and some leftover valentines day carnations in milkglass?

So kids, last week I had a bit of sadness enter my life.  One of my most favoritest bands, The White Stripes, are no more.

If you haven’t given them a listen, you have been deprived.  We were planning on seeing them live the next time they tour.  Now we won’t be able to and this is a lesson in ‘sometimes there may not be a next time.’

They went on a tour across Canada in 2007 and released their only live album, a dvd documentary, and a book of photographs taken documenting the tour.  You can get the whole box set for about $260 – or buy it piece by piece like me.  I just received the book in the mail.  It is normally $45 but right now on Amazon its $9.  My friend Jimmy tweeted that deal to me and I immediately snagged it!

I didn’t want to take too many pictures of someone elses photography – so here is the cover and my favorite shots – Meg and Jack sleeping on a plane.

Books

Reads.

I finished Harry Potter and The Sorcerers Stone last week and moved on to my other christmas book – The Virgin Suicides.  What can I say?  Its good.  Like you ever thought I wouldn’t like it.

One line really stuck out to me, spoken by Dumbledore to Harry at the end of the book.

“…to the well organized mind, death is but the next great adventure.”

Next Reads.

So, to bring up Harry Potter again.  I was always into the movies – never read the books (somehow, even though I’m a reader).  All of a sudden I just feel like I HAVE to read the books.  I guess its the realization setting in that before too long there will be no more movies….its the only way to get my fix.  I can’t wait to begin reading these books.  P.S.  I want a Harry Potter tattoo.

Lisa Litwack created these book covers for a few Stephen King covers – and I would like to see more!

My uncle is a graphic design artist and he is going to love these!
